Wow! It’s hard to believe that Things to Do & Places to Stay in Wisconsin has officially been up and active as a Wisconsin traveler blog for a full year now!

We kicked off last March with a very short post on Pet Friendly WI Vacations and thought it would be appropriate to circle back around and do it again, with more info, some great pet stories from our members & even a couple of pics of our own pets…

When Olive strikes a pose, Michelle, our guru of all things printed, posted or published, is always willing to snap a quick pic!

Also in 2009, WisconsinLodging.info was featured in a story on Pet Friendly Vacations in Wisconsin in Fetch magazine. Check out the story, including how Judy at  The Edgewater hotel in Madison will even do a little pet-sitting in her office when needed! You can find well over 350 Wisconsin properties that all welcome “pets with prior approval” when you search at WisconsinLodging.info including some of these great escapes:

Lake Delton/ Wisconsin Dells:
If your dog loves to splash and swim, Delton Oaks Lodge on Lake Delton is sure to be a hit. Dogs are allowed to swim in the lake and play on their beach. Fido may even find a new friend as, during a normal summer, they have about a dozen pets at the resort each day.

Door County:
Beach-loving dogs will also want to try out the Beachfront Inn in Bailey’s Harbor… Fido will find a treat bag in the room upon his arrival and all dogs are welcome on the beach and water area off leash to run and have fun.  Finally, be sure to ask at the front desk, as the Inn has been known to even find a dog-sitter for guests who wish to have a night out without their pet.

The lovable Homer enjoys traveling all across Wisconsin with Bill, our membership & revenue wizard.

Northwoods, Boulder Junction:
If a cabin in the woods is more your style, check out Evergreen Lodge on Little Crooked Lake. Whether you’re hiking the trails, trying your hand at fishing, or simply relaxing on the beach, there are plenty of ways for both you and Fido to enjoy your vacation in the Northern Highland State Forest.

Please be Courteous
Planning on taking Fido on your next escape? Remember to contact your destination prior to your stay to discuss their pet policies and please, never try to ‘sneak’ your pet into a property! Hoteliers and innkeepers want to ensure the safety and comfort of ALL their guests, so when you and Fido leave at the end of your stay, typically your entire room will be stripped, steamed, scrubbed and cleaned to remove all traces of pet dander. This protects future guests who may have allergies or pet sensitivities.

You just never know…
Those of us who have tried (see Fetch article mentioned above) to travel with our pooches know that funny, crazy, weird things can happen…

Phillip from the Sunrise Lodge in Land O’ Lakes shared this story with us recently:  Once, a “guest brought their expectant dog, she was not due for another week. He went out fishing for the day, returned to find….. Mommie had removed pillows from our NEW sofa, dug out the stuffing to make a nest and gave birth to four puppies.” (At least Mom had good taste!)

He's not much of a traveler, but he's all ours & we love him!

Beth from the Super 8 in Portage told us “We once had a guest who left their Houdini-German Shepherd in the room. Despite not being allowed to leave the pet unattended, they did – and the dog kept opening the door and coming out, even after multiple attempts to keep him in! We put a baby gate on the door, as well as the guest tried to put a heavy chair blocking the door as they left – he still got out every time.

So, care to share your pet-travel stories with us?

With the state covered in a nice layer of white powder, now is the perfect time to pack up the family and head out for a day outdoors!

There’s a ski park in every region of Wisconsin, so get out to the slopes on the last day (and night) of the year! If you’re not a skier or snowboarder, many places also offer snowshoeing and tubing as well. What a great way to get a head-start on your New Years Resolution, burning those extra calories and making unforgettable memories with the family. Don’t forget your camera!

Wisconsin Dells IS the Waterpark Capitol of the World(R) & what better way to kick off our new series on Wisconsin’s indoor waterparks & water activity centers than with a property located rightAquaKingdom ‘on the Strip’ in the Dells?

At 16,000 square feet, the Atlantis’ indoor waterpark may feel small in comparison to others in the Dells, but young families will enjoy its “small scale and the ability to keep a close eye on young children.”  With both indoor & outdoor pool areas, the Atlantis includes an indoor waterpark with slides, water splash features and basketball hoops plus a quieter indoor “Lobby Pool”.   Parents may also appreciate the poolside bar, open on weekends in the off season.

For the more adventurous, or those with older children, the Atlantis also includes free tickets for Mt. Olympus just a short walk away.  New for weekends in October – the Mt. Olympus opens Bitten, its “First ever “Haunted Night at the Theme Park””.

Another ‘don’t miss’ for your fall getaway -and just down the street from the Atlantis- are the Army Duck Tours.  Open through October, these original Army Ducks offer daily tours through Dells Glacial Park.  (Money Saving Tip: order tickets online & save $3 per person)

As always, click on over to WisconsinLodging.info to learn more about The Atlantis Waterpark Hotel & Suites as well as more Wisconsin waterpark destinations.

000800961My job rocks!  I got to spend yesterday in Wisconsin Dells visiting dozens of our member hotels, motels, resorts & inns. Even in snowy, rainy, April weather, the sandstone bluffs are a truly beautiful site.

After watching Lake Delton drain away in a matter of hours in June of 2008, Dells businesses faced a tough summer travel season last year.  Now, with the road repaired and the lake refilled to within about a foot of pre-breach levels, folks in the the Dells are looking forward to a fabulous summer.

The Waterpark Capital of the World, this resort community hosts more than 20 water parks, both indoors and out.  Included are Wisconsin’s largest indoor waterpark (Kalahari) and the world’s largest outdoor park (Noah’s Ark).  The Wilderness claims to be the largest indoor/ outdoor combo park.  For advice before you hit the waterparks, check out these travel tips from the Wisconsin Dells Travel Guide:
10 tips to ensure a fun filled and safe day out at our Waterparks:

  1. Wear flip flops or water shoes
  2. Wear polarized sunglasses (with a cord is even better!)
  3. Waterproof sunscreen is a must
  4. wear light colored clothing
  5. Buy tickets in advance to avoid lines
  6. Don’t leave valuables unattended, rent a locker to secure them
  7. Keep money, credit cards, IDs with you in a waterproof container
  8. Put an ID card in every kid’s pocket
  9. Arrange a time and place to meet if someone gets separated
  10. Never leave young children alone

But the Dells are more than just waterparks.  The once-again pristine lake is a great place for water sports such as boating, skiing, and even parasailing.  Back and better than ever, the Tommy Bartlet Ski Show returns with a new show and “never-before-seen pyrotechnics”.  Our family’s favorite, the Original Wisconsin Ducks are now back using the lake as part of their tour again as well.

When you’ve had enough water for the day, be sure to head into town.  With unique shops such as Goody Goody Gum Drop Candy and Carr Valley Cheese as well as fun adventures like Lazer Runner Laser Tag and Ripley’s Believe It or Not, you’ll find something for everyone!

The Dells also boast over 8,000 rooms at hotels, motels, B&Bs, inns and resorts.  Find your perfect spot at WisconsinLodging.info,  whether your looking for total relaxation (such as Sundara Inn & Spa) or action-packed fun (perhaps Hotel Rome).

wi-imageEach week I write about places to stay and things to do in Wisconsin because I truly believe we have something to offer for everyone!  But don’t just take my word for it…  Check out what others around the web are saying about traveling in Wisconsin:

If you’re thinking Wisconsin Dells for your summer getaway with fishing, horseback riding, underground caves and, of course, waterparks, Wisconsin Dells – The Perfect Summer Getaway lists the Chula Vista Resort’s Lost Rios Indoor Waterpark among other don’t-miss Dells attractions.

Wisconsin’s Door County is the place to be in summer according to this article from the Bradenton Herald in Bradenton, FL.  If you’re looking for “one of those clean, quietly pristine places that seem almost like a throwback to the mellow 1950s, the old great resort towns of the Catskills, and television shows like ‘Ozzie and Harriett’ and ‘Leave it to Beaver’”, then you’ll definitely want to check out Door County.  Click here for more information on Wagon Trail Resort, described by the author as “surrounded by woods and water, [it's] the ideal place for adding to that anti-stress mode. Its buffet breakfast, seriously one of the best I’ve ever had, and its brimming-with-goodies bakery are considered local institutions.”

If you’re contemplating more responsible travel for 2009, click on over and read this article on sustainable travel and green tourism.  Mentioned in the article is The Pfister Hotel, a TravelGreen Wisconsin certified hotel. To learn more about TravelGreen Wisconsin restaurants, golf courses, attractions and accommodations, check out their site at TravelGreenWisconsin.com
